Topic coverage & article types

EPL publishes Letters, Comments and Replies and Perspectives on any contemporary research topic in physics, including theory, experiment and computation.

EPL organises its articles into the following sections:

  • General physics – Includes classical and quantum physics, acoustics, special relativity, and all topics not covered elsewhere
  • Statistical physics and networks – Includes classical and quantum thermodynamics, kinetic theory and machine learning
  • Mathematical and interdisciplinary physics – Includes geophysics, climate, social systems, complexity
  • Fluid and nonlinear dynamics – Includes chaos, turbulence, micro and nanofluidic
  • Nuclear and plasma physics, particles and fields – Includes nonlinear phenomena in plasmas, particle models and particle interactions, experimental methods
  • Atomic, molecular and optical physics – Includes classical electromagnetism and quantum optics, lasers, cold atoms and matter waves, chemical physics
  • Condensed matter and materials physics – Includes electronic, thermodynamic and mechanical structure, magnetism, mesoscopic physics, superconductivity and topological phases
  • Biological and soft matter physics – Includes biological complexity, rheology, granular media, polymers, phase transitions and thermodynamic properties
  • Quantum information – Includes quantum processing, quantum computation, quantum protocols, quantum simulation, and quantum sensing
  • Gravitation, cosmology and astrophysics – Includes general relativity, quantum gravity, dark matter, inflation, gravitational waves

All articles are subject to a strict length limit and go through a peer review process before publication.

Letters

Letters submitted to EPL should contain new results, ideas, concepts, experimental methods, theoretical treatments, including those with application potential and be of broad current interest and importance to one or several sections of the physics community. The presentation should satisfy the specialist that the content is scientifically sound, yet remain understandable to the researchers in other fields through a suitable, clearly written introduction and conclusion.

EPL does not accept review articles, historical surveys or conference proceedings for consideration as Letters.

Comments and replies

EPL also publishes Comments on Letters previously published in the Journal, and Replies from the authors to these comments. Comments are subject to the same general interest, importance and scientific soundness criteria as letters. They must add significant value to a scientific point centrally related to the Letter being criticised. Comments cannot be used as a vehicle to write a paper simply by extending somebody else’s work, as a substitute for addenda and errata, or to claim priority. Authors cannot Comment on their own work, but do have a right of reply to Comments. Authors of a Comment are encouraged to send it to the authors of the paper criticised before submission.

Perspectives

Perspectives are invited articles that provide a brief, accessible point-of-view on research at the frontiers of physics. Perspectives need not contain new results, but should provide a fresh look at current research. Specific guidance on Perspectives is provided to authors and reviewers. EPL does not accept unsolicited Perspectives.
